DistroKid vs CD Baby, which one is better?

In this post I will review the main services for distributing digitally your music, and getting your songs on popular services like Spotify, Apple Music and iTunes. Stores and streaming services like iTunes and Spotify don't accept your music directly, so you have to go through some third party companies. I have tried both CD Baby and DistroKid, so I will give you a good overview of the pros and cons of each one of them.

DistroKid vs CD Baby, which one is cheaper?

CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com) charged me $49 for my debut album release, which is not too bad, and they take a 9% cut of your net income (after iTunes cut of 30% etc).

I think the advantage of CD baby vs all the other competitors, is that they are the only one not having you to commit to a yearly or monthly fee.
You pay just once for every work you upload (album or single), and they take a cut of your revenue.

But on the other side, DistroKid (www.distrokid.com)at just $19.99 per year, with unlimited releases, it's so attractive that it's difficult to ignore it. And they don't take any cut on your earnings, leaving you 100%.

I think the only possible downside for DistroKid would be in the case you couldn't afford anymore to pay the $19.99 yearly fee at some point. In that case, the music will be pulled out from the online stores (iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Google Music, Amazon etc.).

On the other side, once you upload something with CD Baby, and pay the album one-time fee, the music will stay on the stores regardless of your future ability to make the payment.

Service comparison:

Having tried both of them, I can give you a first-hand feedback on their service.

CD Baby made me go through few steps in order to finalize and approve my content. CD Baby is also a platform for selling music itself, and that means that you have to go through few steps such as completing your bio, writing a description of your album, etc.

DistroKid interface is very minimalistic: intuitive and easy to use. I had just to drag my files and artwork, and after few hours the album was on iTunes. Spotify took longer though, as it happened with CD Baby, just because how it works compared to other platform like iTunes or Amazon.

I was happy with both of them, but I found DistroKid quicker and easier to use, with its no-frills interface.

Conclusion:

At such a competitive price, with no cuts on revenue and backed by a fast delivery to platforms, DistroKid is the winner for me.

If you intend to release several works, and be an active musician for your future years ahead, $19.99 is a great proposition.
Coupled with a smooth and easy to use service, it makes DistroKid my favourite choice on the market.

Tunecore & Reverbnation

There are two other main distributors on the market as well: Tunecore and Reverbnation.

Tunecore offers a yearly fee structure, with zero % fees on sales, but the yearly fee is far way higher than DistroKid.

Reverbnation basic service is $19.95 per month, with 2 max digital releases per year. Again, another expensive option.
It's true that you get some additional services in the price (like profile page, facebook app); but if you are just looking for the distribution service, with no frills, DistroKid is the way to go. You can always invest more money in building your website separately, and it will surely cost you less.

After your music hits Apple Music and Spotify, you can start to attract some followers and attention by create a profile on SoundCloud, and upload some of your songs. Please read my next post to learn how maximise your exposure on SoundCloud.

  1. DISTROKID IS SCAM! avoid them at all cost! i have sold 8 albums on itunes and only received 14 $. Their support is not responding to my question and instead is just sending me random links such as *can i set my own prices* . I am asking them as simple question on how 8 albums that cost 9.99 can only give me 14 $ and they are just not evading the answer. So far i have been sending back and forth for 2 weeks emails with out success.

    AT ALL COST STAY AWAY!

    1. I also think Distrokid is a SCAM! They deleted all of my music with no prior notification. When I emailed them (no other communication is possible) I received a message saying my music was deleted because of "infringement". I wrote each of the songs, I have the copy rights and publishing on each of the songs and recorded them so I asked that they tell me specifically what I infringed upon---I am waiting for a reply.

    3. Hi,

      DistroKid founder here.

I'm sorry the stores removed your content for copyright infringement.

At DistroKid, the best we can do in these cases is refund you.

In rare cases like yours--when stores remove albums due to copyright claims-- we don't have much other information other than (usually) who the claimant is that filed a copyright takedown notice against you.

The distributor--whether DistroKid, CD Baby, or anyone else--is at the mercy of the stores (and DMCA laws) when this happens

  2. Thanks for your comment Diego.
I have only received payments for Streaming revenues from DistroKid, and they were all fine. I doubt that they will put their credibility at risk by paying you less that what they own you. I hope you'll be able to solve the issue soon. Good luck

  5. I have been with cdbaby for awhile now. Get a check a few times a year for $20. Do you recommend switching to distrokid altogether, getting away completely from cdbaby, or is it possible to be with both? Or to go back and forth to see if there is a difference? What do you suggest to increase activity with cdbaby? Thanks for such an informative article.

    1. Hi Tchiya,
I don't think the distribution service would really affect your activity and the number of listeners you can reach. They both distribute to the main stores, so there is no difference. If you open a DistroKid account, given that you would pay an annual subscription, it would make sense to move all your music there -I am not sure if releasing another album under the same artist name, through another distribution service, would create some problems or conflicts-. I moved all my music from CD Baby and re-released through Distro Kid, but you can try to keep them both a t the beginning and see how it goes. Thanks

    2. Hi Luca - was it easy to move all your music from CDBaby to Distro Kid? did you use the same ISRC codes for each songs/album? and most important - was the music online continue from the same point (such as with same amount of listeners or was it started from zeor?

  6. Stay away at all cost. There is no client service whatsoever and they'll promise anything as long as you pay them. After payment there is chaos...

  8. DistroKid founder here.

To the author- thanks for the review! We agree with your assessment that DistroKid is the best! We try hard and love our artists.

To the commenter who was banned for infringement- online stores ban artist when copyright claims are made against them. Distributors have no control over this. Best we can do is refund.

To the commenter who feels he wasn't paid enough for his sales- We pass 100% of royalties to DistroKid artists. We do not take a cut. It's possible that all your sales hadn't been reflected yet, and will appear on a future royalty report. Stores usually have a 2-3 month delay from when an album is purchased, to when the sale is reported.

Please reach out to support@distrokid.com with any questions or just to say hi!

    Thanks,

    1. These comments are scary, I actually joined Distrokid but haven't uploaded music yet, How soon do you issue isrc codes and are they given to artist to register with soundscan and mediabase?

      Delete
    2. Hi Linda,
as soon as my album was approved, in few hours, I got the ISRC codes assigned automatically to each song. Not sure about your question about soundscan and mediabase, I have never heard about those services.

  10. Because of CD Baby's YouTube options, we chose to release our Christmas single on CD Baby rather than Distrokid. It's been five days, and we're still waiting to be on iTunes. At this rate, it's going to be after Christmas before it shows up. IF the stories of Distrokid getting songs on iTunes in less than a day are true (don't know, never used it), we may have made a large error. We really like CD Baby, but it is slow.

    1. Hi guys,
      sorry to hear about that!
That was pretty much my experience, as described in the post, although I had no urgency to release my record. CD Baby took a while -like a week-, while through Distrokid the music was on iTunes in few hours, although it took more to get on Spotify.
Not sure if it was really CD Baby being slower to pass the music to the stores, or the bottleneck was more at their end.

    1. Hi,

While I certainly understand their frustration, it seems the 2 negative comments here are: 1) someone who was banned by stores for copyright infringement, and 2) someone who feels the stores should pay higher rates.

Unfortunately these are two things that are out of our (or any distributors) control.

The things that we can control: pricing, speed and service--we hope you'll find are leagues beyond any other distributor.

Try DistroKid and you won't be disappointed (unless you're a copyright infringer. In which case please use Tunecore or CD Baby:)

    5. Hi Laird, the statement "This comment has been deleted by the author" is an automated response created by Blogger when the author of the COMMENT not the author of the BLOG, had deleted his/her own comment shortly after posting it. So I have zero control on that.

  13. Hello Pud,
I have the whole conversation with Distro Kid support from 3 weeks period on email .
I have been asking the support team a simple question . If a price for album is xxx $ ( example) and as per your statistics I have sold 120, they why am I getting only xxx $?

I just wanted an explanation but all i was getting in my emails is this page https://distrokid.desk.com/customer/portal/articles/1283192-can-i-set-my-own-prices-

no one cared about my concerns, no matter how many times i have tried asking this simple question i was just pushed away. A little digging into this in google and bing i foudn other people complaining about the support.

If you would really care - you would have at least asked in public me some questions related to the incident rather than pushing it away and saying that its false statements.

  18. The Distrokid situation is definitely sketchy.
I see Pud responding on numerous feeds, multiple sites to people's concerns.
His responses are usually spurious and the funny thing is, if customer service at Distrokid had been taking care of the customers then they wouldn't be on public forums complaining in the first place.
So it's great that Pud shows his face on public posts but that does nothing for the customer day to day who is trying to get help and hears nothing until they post publicly.
I trust my instinct so I think I will pass.

  19. I loved distrokid until they said my album was rejected by stores,I guess because of too many albums? I tried to find out which store rejected my album so I could submit it to all the stores except the one who rejected it,distrokid would not tell me, on their wbsite they say "be prolific" but should add "just not too prolific or your album will be rejected".I have submitted an album after this and we will see how distrokid handles it. until that issue distrokid was pretty good,I even withdrew $40 in sales, but what good if I cant release anymore albums?!
